The Quiet Luxury of Wood: Jan Semotam of Ebony and Co

Alex
June 26, 2026

It’s impossible, said the architect, examining plans calling for boards over ten metres long. That’s wonderful, precisely my sort of challenge, the client replied. Eighteen months later, an extension to the mill was built in Panningen, The Netherlands, transforming the impossible into reality.

Thus were born the celebrated twelve-metre boards, marking a new chapter in the Ebony and Co story. Jan Semotam, Director of Ebony and Co Dubai, shares the philosophy behind three decades of bespoke hardwood floors. Our journey spans more than three decades, beginning in the United States, where the Irish and Dutch founding partners shared a vision of creating floors that celebrate the natural character of wood.

They developed a trusted network of family-owned lumber suppliers, carefully selecting wide and long trees to craft bespoke wide plank floors and hand-applied finishes. Today, our collection includes a curated selection of the finest American and European hardwoods, chosen for their authenticity and refined beauty. Over the years, our bespoke wide plank floors have been selected for some of the world’s most refined interiors: the homes of Donna Karan, the Clinton family, Harrison Ford, and many other distinguished clients across more than 55 countries.

Among our most remarkable materials is bog oak — ancient timber that has rested beneath peat bogs for thousands of years. Each trunk is carbon dated, revealing an age of between 5,000 and 7,000 years. With its deep black tone and subtle texture, bog oak embodies the quiet strength and timeless beauty that define our work.

To encounter a log like this requires patience, knowledge and perseverance, the very qualities that define our craft. Not two trunks are ever the same, and in that uniqueness lies their poetry. For a penthouse in Monaco, our artisans created bespoke elements in wengé with a silver ingrained effect, while for another private residence, a bespoke white gold finish was developed to reflect light in a uniquely subtle way.

True luxury is quiet — it becomes more meaningful with time, each mark and each step adding to its story. From forest to floor, we craft pieces meant to be lived with and loved.
